49,000!

For the first time, ever, there are living more than 49,000 people in the Faroe Islands!

On the 1st of August there were living 49,006 people in the Faroe Islands. There were 132 more people born than there died, and 131 more people moved to the Faroe Islands, than there moved from the Faroes.

But the population will probably decrease next month, because a lot of people will move to other countries to study. But the population will probably increase back to more than 49,000 at the turn of the year, if the population will increase the same way it has done the last couple of months.

Fyri allar fyrstu ferð, nakrantíð, búgva tað nú meira enn 49.000 fólk í Føroyum!

Tann 1. august búu 49.006 fólk í Føroyum. Tað vóru 132 fleiri fólk fødd, enn tað doyðu, og 131 fleiri fólk fluttu til Føroyar, enn tað fluttu frá Føroyum.

Men fólkatalið fer nokk at minka næsta mánaða, tí tá flyta nógv til onnur lond í lestrarørindum. Men fólkatalið fer sannlíkt at koma upp um tey 49.000 um ársskiftið, um fólkavøksturin verður tann sami sum teir síðstu mánaðirnar.

Summarið er komið

Vit hava nú havt sól og summar í tríggir dagar á rað! Hitin hevur ligið um tey 20 stigini. Í Føroyum er tað sera heitt, tá hitin er um 20 stig, og tá fara næstan øll útum at njóta hendan deiliga hitan, og at hugna sær saman við vinfólki og familju. Nøkur seta seg bert útum at fáa sær eitt prát, onnur fara at grilla, og nøkur fara á sandin, at "sóla" sær, og at hava tað stuttligt. Og kanska onkur fer ein lítlan svimjitúr í sjónum, eisini? :P

Skýggj vóru næstan ikki at síggja á himmalinum - sjálvur taldi eg eitt einstakt. Tað er ikki ofta at so gott veður er í Føroyum, og tí eru vit øll sera takksom og royna at njóta hvønn ein góðveðursdag, ið kemur.

Summer has come

We've had a sun for three days in a row now! The temperature has been around 20 degrees Celcius(68 F). That's warm in the Faroe Islands, and almost everybody go outside to enjoy the nice heat, and to enjoy themselves together with friends and family. Some just sit down outside and have a talk, others barbecue, and some go on the beach to "tan" themselves, and have some fun. And maybe some take a little swim into the ocean, as well? :P

There were almost no clouds in the air - I, myself, could only count one single cloud. It's not often that we have such good weather in the Faroes, and we are therefor all very grateful and try to enjoy all the days with good weather, that comes along.

New books for foreigners learning Faroese!

"Now two books will be published for foreigners, who speak English, and want to learn Faroese.

It's two doctors in linguistics/philology that have written these books. One of the books is a grammar book with 300 pages, and the other one is a 400 page textbook, wherein the reader is led slowly into the modern Faroese community. All the explanations are in English, but there are a lot of conversations in Faroese.

These Faroese conversations are recorded and burnt onto a CD, which is included in the book, so that the reader can listen to good Faroese, and in this way inform themselves on the Faroese language, in both written and spoken Faroese.

The men who have made the books are Hjalmar P. Petersen from Sandavágur, who is a doctor in lingustics from the University in Hamborg, and Jonathan Adams, who is English and a doctor in linguistics from the University in Hull. They have been working on this project for a long time, and have been using the materials when they have taught foreigners in the Faroese summer classes on the Faroese University(Fróskaparsetrið). These materials have awaken a lot of attention and interest, which is the reason for them being published now."

"Nú koma út tvær bøkur fyri útlendingar, sum duga enskt og vilja læra føroyskt.

Tað eru tveir doktarar í málfrøði, sum hava skrivað tær. Onnur er ein mállæra við 300 síðum, og hin er ein 400-síðu lærubók, har næmingurin verður leiddur so við og við inn í tað nútíðar føroyska samfelagið. Allar frágreiðingarnar eru á enskum, men har eru samrøður í hópatali á føroyskum.

Hesar samrøður eru tiknar upp og lagdar inn á eina fløgu, sum er í bókini, so tað ber til hjá næmingunum at hoyra gott føroyskt, og á tann hátt at kunna seg við mál okkara bæði í skrift og talu.

Teir, sum hava gjørt bókina, eru Hjalmar P. Question Time with Miranda: Issue One

Miranda: I have to do a school project on the Pharaoh Island. I heard, that you live there! Can you help me?

Uni: Oh, hello Miranda, nice to meet you. If you mean the Faroe Islands, I will happily help you.

Miranda: I don’t know how you spell it, sorry!! But thank you for helping me! This is the first time I ever heard of the Faroe Island. Is it in the Nile?

Uni: No problem! No, the Faroe Islands aren't in the Nile, although it could sure sound that way. The Faroe Islands are actually located in the middle of the North Atlantic sea, north of Scotland, between Iceland and Norway

Miranda: Oh! I found it on the map, here! I never noticed it before!

It looks like there are several islands!

Uni: Yes, there are 18 islands in total, 17 of them inhabited.

Miranda: Why aren’t all of them inhabited?

Uni: Most of them are. The island that is uninhabited, Lítla Dímun, is quite small (0,82 km2), and is surrounded by steep, high cliffs, so it's too hard to get to. Only sheep and birds live on it.

Miranda: I see. Are the Faroe Islands their own country?

Uni: No, they are not. The Faroe Islands are an autonomous province of the Kingdom of Denmark. In other words, we belong to Denmark, just as Greenland does.

Miranda: Like slaves?

Uni: Haha, no. The connection is mostly historical, and it helps us, because we are such a small nation. It’s not so different from the way the United States owns Puerto Rico, or even Hawaii, although Denmark doesn’t have states like the United States does.

Miranda: But I guess the Faroe Islands are much, much colder than Hawaii, more like Alaska!

Uni: Haha, surprisingly enough, the Faroe Islands aren’t nearly as cold as Alaska! Although they lie 62° North, the Gulf Stream moderates the climate, so we have mild winters. Our harbours never freeze, and snow melts away quickly. The average temperature in our coldest month is 3°C/37°F.But still, it’s not tropical, like Hawaii! In summers the Faroe Islands are quite cool, with the average temperature during our warmest month at 11°C/52°F.

Miranda: Wow, the difference between winter and summer isn’t very big! What is the weather like, other than the temperatures? Is it usually rainy, or sunny?

Uni: The climate is fairly wet, with lots of rain and fog, and sometimes big storms too. We get 1500 mm of rain annually, whereas Chicago, for example, gets 840, and Bergen, Norway, one of the wettest places on earth, gets 2250. But of course there are also many fine, sunny days - 927 hours of sunlight a year!

Miranda: Wow! So, do people in the Faroe Islands speak English, or Danish?

Uni: We speak both Danish and English, as 2nd and 3rd languages. Our mother tongue is Faroese.

Miranda: But I’ve never heard of Faroese! And does this mean, that you speak three languages?

Uni: Oh, no worries, many haven't. Yes, all of us speak three languages, and in high school, some choose to learn an extra foreign language, such as German or Spanish, as well.

Miranda: Isn’t it difficult, and confusing? I don’t think that Americans could do it.

Uni: I guess it is difficult and confusing for some, but we are taught Danish from 3rd grade, and English from 4th, and it's easier to learn languages when you are young. So, I guess if Americans would learn foreign languages in Elementary school, they would manage just fine.

Miranda: What kind of a language is Faroese? And where do Faroese people come from?

Uni: Faroese is most similar to Icelandic and some dialects of Norwegian, although it has been influenced somewhat by Danish. The remoteness of the Faroe Islands have helped Faroese to remain a very distinct language. Faroese people came from Vikings who accidentally hit the Faroe Islands while travelling west to Iceland.

Miranda: So, does everyone have blonde hair and blue eyes?

Uni: No. Maybe more than in America, but not as many as in Sweden, for example! Most Faroese people have blue or green eyes, and blonde or brown hair.

Miranda: Are the Faroe Islands part of the E.U.? What kind of money do you use?

Uni: No, the Faroe Islands aren't a part of the E.U. We use the same currency as Denmark, Danish Krona(DKK), but we have our own printed bills.

Miranda: Thank you so much, Uni! Now I know many things about the Faroe Islands! I know that they are a European nation, under the control of Denmark, with their own language, Faroese. I also know something about the people, climate, and currency. The most surprising things I learned today were that all Faroese learn three languages in school, and that the difference in temperature between winter and summer is only about 8°C/15°F!

Miranda: Eg veit ikki hvussu tað verður stavað, orsaka!! Men takk fyri at tú hjálpir mær! Hetta er fyrstu ferð yvirhøvur, at eg havi hoyrt um Føroyar. Eru tær í Nilánni?

Uni: Tað bilar einki, og einki at takka! Nei, Føroyar eru ikki í Nilánni, sjálvt um tað saktans hevði kunnað ljóðað soleiðis. Føroyar eru í veruleikanum mitt í Norðuratlantshavinum, norðanfyri Skotland, millum Ísland og Noregi.

Miranda: Áh! Eg fann tær á kortinum, her! Eg havi ongantíð lagt merki til tær, áður!Tað sær út sum um har eru fleiri oyggjar!

Uni: Ja, her eru 18 oyggjar tilsamans, og har búgva fólk á 17 av teimum.

Miranda: Hví búgva fólk ikki á øllum oyggjunum?

Uni: Tað gera tað á teimum flestu. Oyggin, sum einki fólk býr á, Lítla Dímun, er rættiliga lítil (0,82km2), og er umringað av brattum, høgum bjørgum, so hon er ring at sleppa til. Einans seyðir og fuglar búgva á oynni.

Miranda: Áh soleiðis. Eru Føroyar teirra egna land?

Uni: Haha, yvirraskandi nokk, so eru Føroyar slettis ikki líka kaldar sum Alaska! Sjálvt um tær liggja á 62° Norður, so heldur Golfstreymurin veðurlagið flótt, so vit hava mildar vetrar. Okkara bryggjur frysta ongantíð, og kavi smeltar burtur aftur skjótt. Miðalhitin í okkara kaldasta mánaði er 3°C/37°F. Men tað er tó ikki tropiskt, líka sum Hawaii! Um summrini eru Føroyar rímiliga kaldar, við miðalhitanum 11°C/52°F.

Miranda: Vauv, munurin millum vetur og summar er ikki nakað serliga stórur! Hvussu er veðrið annars? Er tað vanligani regn, ella sól?

Uni: Veðurlagið er rímiliga vátt, við nógvum regni og toka, og onkuntíð stórum stormum eisini. Miranda: Er tað ikki torført og ørkymlandi? Eg vildi ikki trúð at amerikanarar høvdu klára tað.

Uni: Eg vildi trúð at tað er torført og ørkymlandi fyri summi, men vit læra føroyskt frá 3. flokki, og enskt frá 4. flokki, og tað er lættari at læra mál, tá ein enn er ungur. So, eg vildi hildi, at um Amerikumenn høvdu lært seg útlendsk mál í barnaskúlanum, høvdu tey klára seg fínt.

Miranda: Hvat slag av máli er føroyskt? Og hvaðani koma føroyingar?

Uni: Føroyskt líkist mest íslendskum og nøkrum dialektum av norskum, tó er føroyskt vorið ávirkað nógv av donskum. Tað at Føroyar liggja so langt burtur frá umheiminum hevur hjálpt føroyska málinum at vera verandi eitt sera sermerkt tungumál. Føroyingar koma frá víkingum, sum av óvart komu til Føroyar, meðan teir sigldu vestur til Íslands.

Miranda: Hava øll so ljóst hár og blá eygu?

Uni: Nei. Kanska meira enn í Amerika, men ikki líka nógv sum í t.d. Svøríki! Teir flestu føroyingarnir hava blá ella grøn eygu, og ljóst ella brúnt hár.

Miranda: Eru Føroyar limur í ST? Hvat slag av pengum brúka tit?

Uni: Nei, Føroyar eru ikki limir í Sameindu Tjóðum. Vit nýta sama gjaldoyra sum Danmark, danska krónan(DKK), men vit hava okkara egnu seðlar.

Miranda: Stóra takk fyri, Uni! Nú veit eg nógv um Føroyar! Eg veit at tær eru ein Evropeisk tjóð, under donskum veldi, við teirra egna máli, føroyskt. Eg veit eisini eitt sindur um fólkið, veðurlagið, og gjaldoyrað. Tað sum eg gjørdist mest ovfarin av øllum tí sum eg lærdi í dag, var at allir føroyingar læra trý mál í skúlanum, og at munurin á hitanum millum vetur og summar er einans um tey 8°C/15°F!

Ruddingardagur

Í dag er so ruddingardagur, har ung sum eldri í kommununi fara út at rudda rusk úr náttúruni.

Tað eru nógvar kommunur í Føroyum, sum hava ruddingardag. Á ruddingardegnum í Eysturkommunu(har eg búgvi), varð fyrst farið yvir í skúlan til kaffi/saft og rundstykkir kl. 8:30. Farið varð so at rudda ymsastaðnið í kommununi. Tá ruddingin varð liðug, varð farið á fótbóltsvøllin at grilla, og hugna sær saman. Hvørt húski, ið luttekur í ruddingini, fær so 3 træplantur í potti.

Veðrið var so ótrúliga gott, at tað kundi næstan ikki verið betri! Sól, 14 stig og eitt lítið lot.. :D

"Clearing"-day

Today is clearing day(cleaning outside, making it tidy?), where both young and old people in the municipality go outside to take up garbage in the nature.

There are many municipalities in the Faroe Islands which have "clearing-day." On the "clearing-day" in East-municipality(where I live), people first went over to the school for coffee/lemonade and morning buns at 8:30 AM. Then there was cleaned different places in the municipality. When the clearing was done, people headed for the football field to barbeque, and have a great time together. Every family(/house) who attended in the clearing/cleaning, then got 3 treeplants in pots.

The weather was so incrediblely great that it almost couldn't have been better! Sun, 14 degrees Celsius, and a light breeze.. :D

ALS, ein hin besta skipanin í heiminum

Eg hoyrdi í tíðindunum í dag, at broytingarnar í ALS skipanini nú eru samtyktar. Og eftirsum at fíggjastøðan í heiminum er sum hon her, so skrivi eg stutt um broytingarnar her.. :P

Við broytingunum í ALS skipanini verður útgjaldið 80% av a-inntøkuni fyrsta árið, og loftið sett til 20.000 krónur um mánaðin, ímóti góðum 12.000 krónum áður. Annað árið lækkar útgjaldið niður í 75%, og loftið verður 18.750 krónur. Loftið verður væl betri enn í hinum Norðurlondunum. Loftið í Danmark er 17.000 krónur um mánaðin, og í øðrum Norðurlondum er tað uppaftur lægri.

Áðrenn broytingarnar rindaði ALS um 50 milliónir krónur út um árið, og hækka tær upp í einar 90 milliónir krónur aftaná broytingarnar. ALS(ArbeiðsLoysisSkipanin) hevði fyri einum 10 árum síðani hall, men hava spart í góðum tíðum, og eru nú klár at gjalda út aftur, nú heldur ringari tíðir eru. ALS hevur nú um 700 milliónir krónur á bók. Og arbeiðsloysið í mars 2009 var 3,4%(955 fólk, 554 mannfólk og 401 konufólk).

ALS, one of the best systems in the world

I heard on the news today that the changes in the ALS system are now passed. And because of the Global Crisis is as it is, I'm going to write shortly about the changes here.. :P

With the changes in the ALS system, the "payment" will be 80% of the [income taxed at source] the first year, and the maximum wage DKK 20,000 a month, while it was around DKK 12,000 before. On the 2nd year of unemployment, the "payment" decreases to 75%, and the maximum wage will be DKK 18,750. The maximum wage will be better than in the other Northern Countries. The maximum wage in Denmark is DKK 17,000 a month, and in other Northern Countries, it's even less than that.

ALS paid out around DKK 50,000,000 a year, and will this number increase to around DKK 90,000,000 a year after the changes. ALS(the Unemployment System) had for around 10 years ago nothing, but have saved up in the good times, and are now ready to pay back out, now when worse times are(..?). ALS does currently have around DKK 700,000,000 "in the bank". And the unemployment rate in mars 2009, was 3,4%(955 people, 554 of them were men and 401 women).

Umhvørvisvikan í Tórshavn

Umhvørvisvika var í Tórshavn í døgunum 4. til 10. maj. Endamálið við umhvørvisvikuni var at varpa meira ljós á umhvørvið. Temaið í umhvørvisvikuni í ár var Orka.

Í sambandi við umhvørvisvikuna gjørdi klippfisk fýra stuttfilmar, ið allir viðgjørdu evnið, "Soleiðis spara vit orku!"

Environment Week in Torshaven

There was an environment week in Tórshavn on the days, 4th to 10th of may. The purpose of the environment week was to make more people notice the environment. The theme of the environment week this year was "Energy."

Because of the environment week, Klippfisk(an shortfilm/movie-thing on the Faroes) made four shortmovies which all had the subject: "This is how we save energy!"

Føroyar hava nógvan sonevndan antiviralan heilivág (t.d. tamiflu) á goymslu til at fyribyrgja og viðgera svínakrím við. Í løtuni kunnu vit viðgera yvir 30% av Føroya fólki, sum er meira enn fleiri av okkara grannalondum, og sum verður mett at verða ríkiligt í sambandi við eina pandemistøðu. Harumframt hava Føroyar í samstarvi við Statens Serum Institut, eins og Danmark, fingið vaccinutrygd til umleið helmingin av føroyingum.

Ready for swine flu

You have all probably heard about the bad swine flu, which is attacking in Mexico and South America. It has now also come over the Atlantic Ocean, and to Europe, where there has been found cases of swine flu in Germany and Spain, and other places.

The Faroese pandemic group has discussed the situation, if the swine flu should come to the Faroe Islands.

Step by step, the group discussed the safety measures, so that everyone agreed on how the flu shall be treated in the Faroe Islands. The members in the group were together told once again, which role the different authoroties have in the safety measures, and possible disputed points were solved.

The conclusion is that the situation in the Faroe Islands is pretty good. And if the H1N1 flu gets confirmed to be here, then the auhoroties will be ready. The Faroe Islands have a lot of the so called antiviral medecine(f.ex. tamiflu) in stock for preventing and treating the swine flu with. At the moment we can treat over 30% of the Faroese people, which is more than a lot of the neighbour countries can, and is more than thought being enough to treat a pandemic situation. In addition to that, the Faroe Islands, in co-operation with "the State Serum Institute," have, just like Denmark, gotten vaccination security for around half of the Faroe Islanders.

Fráboðan um frítíðarløn

Í dag, tá eg var komin heim úr arbeiði, og komin undan brúsuni, sá eg eitt bræv liggja á skriviborðinum í kamari mínum. "Fráboðan um frítíðarløn" stóð á.. Eg hugsaði bara, jubii!.. :D

Eg havi ongantíð arbeitt so nógv áður, at eg havi fingið munandi nøgdir av peningi í frítíðarløn. Hetta er eisini fyrsta árið, at eg havi arbeitt so at siga hvønn dag (tó bert síðani aftaná summarfrítíðina).

Eitt tað fyrsta, sum eg legði til merkis, var at tekstirnir á brævinum stóðu bæði á føroyskum, og á enskum. -nokk grunda av at tað búgva alt fleiri útlendingar í Føroyum, enn tað hava gjørt. Síðst eg minnist, so stóð teksturin ikki tvímæltur á tílíkum brøvum.. :P

Frítíðarlønin í Føroyum er skipað á tann hátt, at so hvørt ein, ið er tímaløntur, tjenar pening á einhvørjum arbeiði, verða 12% lagt afturat, og skattað verður av øllum tí. Tey tólv prosentini verða síðani flutt í ein frítíðarlønargrunn, hvaðani øll fáa lønina útgoldna tann 1. mai.

Annaðleiðis er tó við teimum fastløntu. Tey fáa fimm viku frítíð - við løn, pluss umleið 1%, sum fer ígjøgnum somu áðurnevndu skipan.

Notification about Holiday Allowance

Today, when I arrived back home from work, and had come out of the shower, I saw a letter lying on the desk in my room. "Notification about Holiday Allowance," there stood.. and I just thought, jubii!.. :D

I have never worked that much before that I have gotten a reasonable amount of money in Holiday Allowance. After all, this is the first year that I have worked like, everyday (although, only since last summer).

One of the first things that I noticed, was that the texts in the letter were in both Faroese, and in English. -probably because the fact that there are living more and more foreigners in the Faroes. Of what I can recall, the text wasn't bilingual on such letters.. :P

The Holiday Allowance is made in this way in the Faroe Islands: Whenever one person who gets hourly pay, gets paid from work, there will be added 12% to that amount, and then the taxes will be drawn off. Those twelve percent will then be moved into a "Holiday Allowance Account," wherefrom everyone get their Holiday Allowance paid out on 1st of may.

Though, there's a difference with those who get a monthly pay. They get 5 weeks vacation - with allowance(with pay), pluss around 1%, which goes through the same system as the one above.

Páskirnar í Føroyum

Eg fari her at skriva rímiliga stutt um páskirnar í Føroyum. (Og orsaka fyri ikki at skriva nakað rímiliga leingi!)

Í skúlunum í Føroyum fáa børn páskafrítið, tá páskirnar eru - ístaðin fyri at tey fáa várfrítíð sum børnini fáa í USA. Børnini fáa frí frá vikuskiftinum áðrenn páskirnar, og til týsdagin aftaná páskirnar. Vikan áðrenn páskini verður kallað "Stillavika," og tá skal eingin larma. Í stilluviku fyrr, var púra kvirt úti, eingin gekk úti og spældi, ella gjørdi eitthvørt, ið larmaði; men nú er hendan vikan júst sum allar aðrar vikur her, í Føroyum.

Øll hini, sum t.d. arbeiða og tílíkt, fáa frí hósdagin áðrenn páskirnar, og til týsdagin, tá tey fara aftur til arbeiðis. Tann hósdagurin og fríggjadagurin eru halgidagar, og eita ávíkavist skírisdagur og langi fríggjadagur. Sunnudagurin er 1. páskadagur og mánadagin er 2.

Vit fáa sjálvandi eisini páskaregg á páskum. Tey eru sjálvandi øll innflutt, frá Danmark og Onglandi. Tó er/var ein lítil sjokolátuhandil í Havn, har eg haldi at ein kann keypa føroysk páskaregg, hóðast tað er óvanligt. Í ár keypti eg eitt páskaregg, ið líkist tí størra av hesum:

Annars eru eisini onnur sløg, so sum Cadburry og Nestle.. :P

Vit rulla eisini páskaregg, sum vit kóka og mála. Her er eitt dømi av málaðum eggum, ið eg fann á netinum:

Hesi eggini plagdu vit at rulla oman gjøgnum brekkurnar, inntil tey brotnaðu; tó lótu vit nøkur vera eftir, til at eta.. ;)

Easter in the Faroe Islands

I'm going to write rather short about easter in the Faroe Islands. (And I'm sorry for not writing anything for fairly long!)

In the schools in the Faroe Islands, the children get "easter-holidays," during easter - instead of the vecation that is in the USA, the spring holiday or something. The children don't have school from the weekend before easter, and untill the tuesday after easter. The week before easter is called "silent week," and during it, no one should make noise. In the old days, no one would make aany noise during "silent week." No one would be outside playing, or do something that would make noise; but nowadays, this week is just like every other week here, in the Faroe Islands.

Everybody else, who for example work and stuff like that, get days off, from Thursday before easter and till Tuesday after easter. That Thursday and Friday are (halgidagar), and are called "Skírisdagur" and "Langi fríggjadagur(Long Friday)". The Sunday is 1st easter day, and Monday the 2nd easter day.

Of course, we also get easter eggs on easter. They are all, of course, imported from mainly Denmark or the UK. Althought there is/was a small chocolate shop in Tórshavn, where I think one could buy Faroese easter eggs, though it is unusual. This year, I bought a easter egg, which looks like the larger one on the picture.

Well, we also have other kinds of easter eggs, like the ones on the 2nd picture.

We also roll easter eggs, which we boil and paint. On the 3rd picture, you can see a picture of painted eggs that I found online.

We used to roll those eggs down the hills, untill they fell apart; and we also kept some to eat.. ;)

1. apríl í Føroyum

Ja, 1. apríl verður "hildið" í Føroyum, og er hetta ein sera stuttligur dagur!.. :D

Útvarpið plagar oftani at senda "1. apríl." Eitt árið minnist eg, at teir søgdu í útvarpinum, at ein ísbjørn úr Grønlandi var á veg til Føroyar, á einum ísflaka. Útvarpið hótti á fólk um at vera til reiðar at skjóta bjørnina, um hon rak á land í Føroyum, soleiðis at eingin mannskaði varð av henni. So menn fóru oman til strondina við byrsu í hond, men har kom eingin bjørn.. xD

Í ár søgdu teir okkurt við at Bill Clinton hevði fingið flagtekju á summarhúsini, og høvdu kanningar longu víst, at orkusparingar vóru á 32%! Og nú varð farið undir at leggja flag frá Kirkjubø á Hvítu Húsini í Washington. haha! :D

Tú kanst lurta eftir øllum tíðindunum her! "1. apríl" er á umleið 16:05 ;)

"April Fools" in the Faroe Islands

Yes, "April's fool" is !celebrated" in the Faroe Islands, and it really is a very funny day!.. :D

The National Radio often sends "April's fool." One year, I remember that they told people on the radio that a Polar bear was floating around on it's way to the Faroes, on an iceberg. The Radio told people to be ready to shoot the bear, if the ice pack came to the Faroese shore, so that no one would get hurt. So men went down to the shore with rifles in their hands, but the bear never came.. xD

This year, they said something about Bill Clinton had gotten grass roof on his summer cabin, and that tests had already shown that powersavings were on 32%! And now they were beginning to lay grass, from Kirkjubøur in the Faroes, on the White House in Washington D.C. haha :D

A Brief History of Flight in the Faroes

Around 650 A.D., the Vikings came to the Faroe Islands. What many people do not know is that on these islands they faced a unique problem - the rough seas and treacherous coastlines of the Faroe Islands prevented them from safely approaching with their boats. In order to solve this problem, the Vikings developed a primitive method of flying, similar in theory to berserking. Originally they had to take off from cliffs, and flew only short distances to their ships in the ocean.

In the year 1912, the Faroese developed the Umbrella Launch, a safer way to take off than the age old method of launching off a cliff. This development made flight far safer, and made it possible for all sorts of people to learn to fly.

In the 1950's, a flight school was developed in Vágar. Nowadays young Faroese travel to the flight school with their classes to recieve safety lessons and a flight certificate.

Sum summi av tykkum kanska longu vita, so hevur X-Factor verið í sjónvarpinum síðstu mongu vikurnar. Ein av luttakarunum var føroyska Linda Andrews, ið fríggjakvøldið, VANN kappingina, við sanginum "So what," hjá Pink, og "Det bedste til sidst," ið varð skrivaður til høvið.

Eg gjørdist rímiliga kløkkur, tá eg sá Lindu koma á pallin, grátandi. Beint áðrenn hon kom fram, var eitt lítið sjónband víst, har familja og vinir Lindu tosaðu um hana, og var tað tí, hon brast út í tár. Gráturin ávirkaði byrjanuna á sanginum, men, sum altíð, kom hon sterkt aftur, og tað eydnaðist bara væl hjá henni ;)

Til finaluna í kappingini sá mann beinleiðis video frá øllum trimum heimbýunum hjá finalistunum. Tí var eisini sent beinleiðis frá Hvonn í Havn, har nógvir av familju, vinum og kenningum hennara vóru til staðar; onnur vóru sjálvandi eisini.. :P

LINDA!

As some og you may already know, the Danish X-Factor has been shown on TV the last many weeks. One of the participants was the Faroese Linda Andrews, who Friday evening WON the show, with the song, "So what" by Pink, and "Det beste til sidst(The best for last)," which was written for the final.

I got rather shocked when I saw Linda appear on stage, crying. Right before she went on stage, there was shown a little video where Linda's family and friends talked about her, which was the reason for her starting to cry. The crying affected the beginning of her singing, but, as always, she came strong back, and it just went on really well for her ;)

On the finals of the show, you could see live video from all three hometowns of the finalists. Therefor there was also sent live from Hvonn(a hotel/resturaunt), in Tórshavn, where a lot of her family and friends were watching; of course, other peole were there as well.. :P

Congratulations, Linda!

Dokumentarsendingar

Kringvarpið er nú, ella fyri nøkrum vikum síðani, farið undir at gjørt dokumentarsendingar, sum teir so senda annaðhvørt hóskvøld. Dokumentarsendingarnar eru á rímiliga høgum støði, í hvussu er til at tær eru føroyskar ;)

Kringvarpið hevur í síðstuni lagt ótrúliga stóran dent á at gera seg sjálvar betri. T.d. kann eg nevna, at teir til jólar høvdu ein avstemning til hvørt fríggjakvøld, um hvønn film teir skuldu vísa tá. At teir nú hava fingið ein talara, til at siga frá, millum hvørja sending, hvat ið kemur aftaná sendingina sum júst er liðug, og hvat kemur seinni á kvøldinum. At teir í Útvarpinum hava roynt at fingið eitt betri "Flow," sum teir kalla tað, frá morgni av, og út á dagin, og nú við hesum dokumentarsendingunum.

Eg haldi at tað er ein ótrúliga undarlig kensla at síggja eina dokumentarsending í Sjónvarpinum, sum er á føroyskum! Alt tað, eg havi sæð, í uppvøkstrinum, hevur antin verið á enskum, ella á donskum. Tað er undarligt, at síggja fólkini tosa føroyskt, og at síggja tað, hjá mær, kenda føroyska umhvørvið, í sjónvarpinum.

Higartil hava verið vístar tvær dokumentarsendingar í Sjónvarpinum. At hyggja at dokumentarsendingum kann hjálpa einum at læra eitt sindur av føroyskum; tað er nokk fragari enn t.d. at hyggja at Degi & Viku, tí á eini dokumentarsending sær ein kenslurnar á andlitinum á persónunum, og alt tað ið gongur fyri seg, meðan í Degi & Viku, eru bara turr tíðindi, har ið myndir onkuntíð verða vístar..

Til ber hjá tær at síggja dokumentarsendingarnar, á netinum:
"Í morgin skal tað vera" - Um heimleys í Føroyum.
"Tá óttin fær valdið" - Um ótta fyri ymiskum, ið eingin grund er at óttast fyri.

Documentaries

Kringvarpið(the national radio and TV of the Faroe Island) have now, or a couple of weeks ago, begun to create documentaries, which they broadcast every second thursday evening. The documentaries are in a pretty high class, at least if you think of that they're Faroese ;)

Kringvarpið has the last couple of months tried to make them self better. I can for example name that the weeks upon Christmas, they had votings for each Friday evening, for what movie they should display. That they now have a speaker, in between every programme, who tells one what the next programmes is going to be, and about the programme the rest of the evening. That they in the Radio, have tried to get a better "Flow," as they call it, during the morning, and through the day, and now with these documentaries.

I think that it is a very weird emotion to see a documentary in the TV, which is in Faroese! Everything else, I've seen, during when I have grown up, has been in English or Danish. It's weird to see the people speak Faroese, and to see the, from my perspective, known Faroese envirement, on TV.

So far, there have been shown two documentaries on TV. To watch these documentaries can help one to learn a little bit of Faroese; it's probably better than watching, for example, "Dagur & Vika"(The national TV news of the Faroe Islands), because in a documentary, you can see the face expressions, and everything that's going on, where as on "Dagur & Vika," there are only shown dry news, with some pictures sometimes..

It is possible for you to watch the documentaries, online:

"When frightness gets the hold of you" - About frightness for stuff, which you have no reason to be frightened for. (Phobias)

Eg hoyrdi í útvarpinum í dag, at nøkur feløg(Atlantic Airways, 62N, Hotel Føroyar, o.s.fr...) saman hava sett á stovn eina heimasíðu, sum fyri tað mesta vendir seg til Danir. Á heimasíðuni hava feløgini valt at vísa ein annan vinkul av Føroyum, og also ikki allar hesar hugtakandi vøkru myndirnar av náttúruni, fjøllunum, havinum og mentanini, men ístaðin ein heldur skemtiligan vinkul. Tey velja eisini at vísa ymiskar virðislønir, ið Føroyar hava fingið, sum t.d. besta oyggjasamfelag í heiminum, minsti høvuðsstaður og at vit hava nógv berghol og nógvir tunnlar.

Marketing abroad!

I heard on the Radio today that some companies(Atlantic Airways, 62N, Hotel Føroyar, etc...) together have created a webpage, which fot the most part is for Danes. On the webpage, the companies have chosen to show a different side of the Faroe Islands, and not all these enchanting pictures of the nature, the mountains, the ocean and the culture, but instead a pretty funny side of it. They focuse a lot on the Faroe Islands as the Sheep Islands, and therefore they have a lot of animated sheep and also some word-plays (in Danish). They also choose to show some awards that the Faroe Islands have gotten, like for example, the best Island group, smallest capital, and that we have a lot of tunnels.

Grækarismessa í dag!

Í dag, 12. mars, er Grækarismessa. Man sigur at taldrið, tjóðarfuglur Føroya, kemur heim aftur úr suðurlondunum hendan dag. Tó eru tjøldrini at síggja væl fyri 12. mars. Dagurin verður eisini sagdur at vera fyrsti várdagur.

Føroyingar plaga at hátíðarhalda henda dag við at flagga, og syngja ymiskir sangir, helst um sangir um at tjøldrini koma heim aftur. Í skúlunum verður tíð tikin úr vanligu tímaætlanini til at fara út, vinda merkið upp í stong, og bjóða tjøldrunum vælheimafturkomin!

"Grækarismessa" is today!

Today, 12th of mars, is "Grækarismessa." It's said that the Oyster bird, the national bird of the Faroe Islands, comes back home from "the south" this day. Although, one can see the Oyster bird a while before the 12th of mars. The day is also said to be the first day of spring.

Faroese people usually celebrate this day by flagging, and by singing several songs, mostly songs about the Oyster birds returning home. In the schools there is set time off, out of the usual schedule, to go outside, put the mark(merkið, the Faroese flag) on a flagging pole, and wish the Oyster birds welcome back home!

Um broytingarnar hjá føroyska málinum gjøgnum tíðirnar

In this post I am going to say a little bit about the origin of the Faroese language, and the changes that it has gone through, from when people, for the most part from Norway, first settled here, in the 8th and 9th centuries. (Although other people, from elsewhere, lived here before.)

When the Norwegians came here, they brought a big part of their language with them. In this way, the Faroese language arose from the Old Norse language. So by and by, mostly because the Faroe Islands were so isolated from other lands, the Old Norse language because a new tongue, namely, Faroese.

At that point the Faroe Islands belonged to Norway. Later Norway, and also the Faroe Islands, came under Danish rule. After that, Denmark and Norway seperated, but the Faroe Islands remained under Danish rule. As the Faroe Islands were now supported by Denmark, it came to have a great influence on them, both on the language and the culture.

Danish became the official language in the Faroe Islands, meaning, that it became used, both in schools, and in churches. The psalms were sung in Danish, and the Bibles were in Danish as well. In the schools speaking Faroese was forbidden. In this way the Danish language came to have a huge influence on Faroese, and quickly set it's footprint in the Faroese language.

There was no Faroese writing system to begin with; but in 1781-82 Jens Chr. Svabo made some trips around the Faroe Islands, and there he wrote down the legends, sagas, and songs that the people had recorded with their oral tradition. He had to make the written language himself, and it so happened that he was in Vága, so he made the written language to record that dialect. In the Faroe Islands there were many dialects, and therefore in 1846 V. U. Hammershaimb came up with a written language, which could be used in all the dialects. He made this by looking up how the roots of the words were spelled in the old language, Old Norse, and spelled the words in this way. Because of this, there came to be a great distance between the written language and the spoken language.

One consequence of the Danish language being spoken in the schools and in the churches was that some Danish and therefore German (through Danish) words came into the Faroese language. Here are some examples: studentur (student), betala (pay), fortelja (tell), begynna (begin), bevara (preserve), forráða (betray), gemeinur (common), sannheit (truth), kerligheit (love), etc. The Faroese have therefore long tried to "purify" the Faroese language, so that it didn't contain so many of these foreign words. The country took control of this in 1985, when the Faroese Language Institute was created. They have worked on recreating 'Faroese' words by comparing the old language and Icelandic, and they use these to create 'new' words.

Tá ið normenninir komu higar, tóku teir ein stóran part av málinum við sær. Føroyska málið er útsprottað av hesum gamla norska málinum, ella kanska heldur gamla norðurlendska málinum(Old Norse). So við og við, nokk mest av tí at Føroyar vóru so avbyrtar frá øðrum londum, bleiv gamla norðurlendska málið til eitt nýtt mál, nemmliga føroyskt.

Tá átti Noregi Føroyar. Seinni Kom Noregi, og tí eisini Føroyar, undir danskt kongsveldi. Seinni aftur, fóru Danmark og Noregi frá hvørjum øðrum, og Føroyar komu undir danskt kongsveldi. At Føroyar nú vórðu stýrdar av Danmark, kom at hava stórar avleiðingar fyri landið; bæði fyri málið, og fyri mentanina.

Danskt skuldi nú nýtast sum alment mál í Føroyum, t.v.s., at tað skuldi nýtast, bæði í skúlum, og í kirkju. Sálmarnir vórðu sungnir á donskum, og bíbliutekstirnir tað sama. Í skúlum var tað ikki loyvt at tosa føroyskt, bert danskt. Men heima, á gøtuni, og millum føroyingar, varð framvegis tosa føroyskt. Tó kom danska málið at hava stórar avleiðingar fyri føroyskt, og setti tað skjótt síni fótasporð á føroyska málið.

Tá var eingin føroysk stavseting beinleiðis gjørd; men í 1781-82 gjørdi Jens Chr. Svabo nakrar rundferðir í Føroyum, har hann skrivaði niður ævintýr, søgur, sagnir og tílíkt. Hann mátti gera sítt egna skriftmál, og av tí at hann var úr Vágunum, so fekk skriftmálið nakrar dialekt trupulleikar. Í Føroyum eru nógvar dialektir, og tí kom V. U. Hammershaimb í 1846 við einum skriftmáli, sum kundi brúkast í øllum dialektum. Hann gjørdi hetta við at hyggja eftir hvussu rótin av orðinum varð stavað í gamla málinum, gomlum norðurlendskum, og stavaði orðini so hareftir. Hetta hevði so við sær, at tað kom at vera langt ímillum skriftmál og úttalan.

Ein avleiðing av at tað varð tosað danskt í skúlanum og í kirkjuni, var at nógv donsk og partvís týsk(gjøgnum danskt) orð vórðu flutt inn í føroyska málið. Her kunnu nevnast nøkur dømi: studentur (student), betala (pay), fortelja (tell), begynna (begin), bevara (preserve), forráða (betray), gemeinur (common), sannheit (truth), kerligheit (love), o.s.fr.
Føroyingar hava tí leingi roynt at "reinsa" føroyska málið, soleiðis at tað ikki inniheldur øll hesu útlendsku orðini. Landið tók stig til hetta í 1985, tá Føroyska málnevndin(www.fmn.fo) varð sett á stovn. Har hava tey millum annað starvast við at gjørt nýggj orð, antin ið at taka tey úr íslendskum, ella við at finna gomul heiti, og seta tey saman av nýggjum.

Føroyskt líkist í dag mest íslendskum og í ein ávísan mun, vesturnorskum. Málið er broytt nógv, um ein hugsar seg eini 5-10 ár aftur í tíðina. Tá vóru "útlendsk" orð javnan nýtt í fjølmiðlunum og millum manna, meðan vit í dag hoyra útvarp og sjónvarp á grótføroyskum ;)
Vit hava fingið nógv nýggj heitið á ymiskum nýggjum lutum, sum allatíðina verða gjørd. Sum dømi kann eg nevna orðið telda(computer) og geymi(USB flash storage device). Tí er tað sera týdningarmikið fyri okkum at allatíðina halda okkum dagførd innan alla tøknina sum allatíðina kemur - um fjølmiðlarnir fyrst byrja at nýta hesi nýggju orð, so er sloppi, plagar man at siga.

Vit vilja ikki hava at føryskt skal enda líka sum norm, tað nú útdeyða máli í Orkney Oyggjum og Hetlandi, og tí mugu vit royna at halda okkum til tað serføroyska, og ikki loyva útlendskum orðum inn í okkara lítla, sára mál. Tí fari eg at royna at skriva so "føroyskt" sum møguligt, hóast tað viðhvørt kann vera neyðugt at skriva nøkur fá útlendsk orð, tíverri.

Eg vóni at tú har úti, sum antin dugir føroyskt, ella lærir teg tað, ístaðin fyri at nýta tey útlendsku-føroysku orðini, heldur fer at taka væl ímóti teimum serføroysku orðunum, og nýta tey, tá høvi er til tað. Tosið føroyskt, og ikki hálvútlendsktmoderniseraðføroyskt!

Faroese Sighting!

Yesterday I was initiated into Alpha Mu Gamma, a language honors society here, and this poster was in the room. (I hope it isn't secret, because now I've photographed it and put it on the internet... XD). As normal for such poster, it said 'Hello!' (or Good Day...) in a number of languages. The Finnish one, Hyvää Päivää, first attracted my attention, because, well, it's very noticeable! Then I was astonished to see Góðan Dag also listed! (It is right below Konnichi Wa) This is the Faroese word for Good Day, and on a poster which only listed about 25 languages, I was thrilled to find it!

Føroysk eygbering!

Í gjár kom eg uppí Alpha Mu Gamma, eitt málsligt ærusamfelag her, og hendan plansjan/plakatin var í rúminum. (Eg vóni/hopi, at hon ikki er loyndarfull, tí nú havi eg tikið mynd av henni, og lagt hana út á netið... XD). Sum vanligt fyri slíkar plansjur, so segði honn "Halló!" (ella Góðan Dagin...) á eini rekkju av ymiskum tungumálum. Tað finnlendska, Hyvää Päivää, fekk fyrst minahuga, tí at, eh.. tað er nokkso lætt at fáa eyga á! So var er yvirraskað av eisini at síggja Góðan Dag á har! Eg var ovurfegin av at síggja tað á eini plansju/plakat vi einum 25 tungumálum á!

Danska X-factor

Sum nøkur av tykkum kanska vita, so hevur danska X-factor tey seinastu fríggjakvøldini verið víst á DR1, og eisini forskotið á Sjónvarpi Føroya. X-factor byrjaði í Danmark, síðsta ár, og kom so aftur í ár.

Grundin til at eg skrivi um tað danska X-factor er, at har er ein føroyingur sum luttekur í har. Linda Andrews(listanavnið, veruliga navnið er Andreasen), sum býr í Danmark, men er úr Føroyum, kom inn til audition, og fekk trý ja, beinanvegin. Danish X-Factor

As some of you perhaps know, the Danish show X-Factor has been shown the last Friday evenings on DR1, and also broadcasted on the National Faroese television. X-Factor began in Denmark, last year, and continued this year.

The reason that I write about the Danish X-Factor is that there is a Faroese woman in it now. Linda Andrews (stage name , her real name is Andreasen), who lives in Denmark, but is from the Faroe Islands, came in to the audition, and got three yesses, immediately. You can see Linda in the audition below:

She went further to the Live shows, and is continuing to go further, and last night she sang ABBA's Money, Money, Money. All the participants sang ABBA songs, because the topic was ABBA.

Other things that one can say about Linda, are that she grew up in Havn (Tórshavn, we call it Havn locally), and was active in the Church community. Eitt sindur um meg sjálvan

Nú er tíðin so komin til at eg nokk má skriva eitt sindur um meg sjálvan. Eg eiti Uni, eri sekstan ár, og skrivi tað mesta av føroyska tekstinum á hesum blogginum, og eitt sindur av tí enska. Mær dámar væl tungumál, teldur, og at samskifta við onnur gjøgnum netið.

Eg og Miranda gjørdu av at gera hendan bloggin, eftir at hon ikki fann nakað tilfar á netinum, at læra seg føroyskt við. Har eru ymisk tíðindi og annað á netinum á føroyskum, men tað nyttar ikki nógv, um ein ikki skilur øll orðini, sum standa á har. Vit gjørdu so hendan bloggin, soleiðis at onnur eisini kunnu fáa nyttu burturúr honum.

Eg búgvi á næststørstu oynni í Føroyum, Eysturoy. Eg vaks partvís upp her, men flutti tó til Tórshavnar í eitt tíðarskeið uppá 2½ ár, men flutti aftur í 3. flokk. Eg arbeiði í løtuni á einum fiskavirki, í míni bygd, eftir lokna skúlagongd(9 ár). Mítt arbeiði ger, at eg fái nógva tíð at standa og hugsa, so kanska verður okkurt skriva á her, sum eg komi í tankar um, meðan eg arbeiði, -men sum oftast ikki, tí eg gloymi tað bara! :(

Eg vóni at hendan verkætlanin fer at eydnast væl! Higartil sær tað út til at gera júst tað, so takk fyri.. :)

By now I think I must write a little bit about myself. My name is Uni, I'm sixteen years old, and I am going to write most of the Faroese text on this blog, and a little bit of the English as well. I really like languages, computers, and to talk with people over the net.

Miranda and I decided to make this blog after she was unable to find good materials for learning Faroese online. There are some news sites and other things on the internet in Faroese, but it can be difficult to use them to learn, if one doesn't know all of the words in the articles. We made the blog for this reason, so that everyone can use it as she will.

I live in the second biggest island of the Faroes, Eysturoy. I grew up partly here, but I also spent two and a half years in Tórshavn. I work in a fish factory, in my village, after I quit school. While I work there, I have a lot of time to think, so I plan to think of things to write about here. Unfortunately, I often forget what I was planning to write about by the time I get home!

I hope that this endeavor will go well! So far it seems as though people are enjoying it. :) Thank you for reading!

The Faroe Islands in Panorama

Myself, I haven't yet been to the Faroe islands. But this collection of beautiful, high quality panoramas might just be the next best thing.

It isn't the easiest site in the world to navigate, but start by clicking on one of the thumbnails, look for the arrow hotspots, and explore. Some of the panoramas show quaint little towns complete grass roofs, others show the capital of Tórshavn, some little alleyways and backyards that make the Faroe Islands seem real, and still others the sweeping and breathtakingly beautiful Faroese landscape.

I spent about 10 minutes looking around, and picked some of my favourite pictures to show.

Føroyar í panorama

Eg sjálv havi ikki verið í Føroyum. Men hendan samlingin av vøkru og hágóðsku myndunum kann væl vera tað næst besta!

Tað er ikki tann lættasta síðani í verðini at reika á, men byrja við at trýsta á tummilsmyndirnar, finn pílarnar, og reika víðari runt í panoramunum. Nøkur av panoramunum vísa hugnaligar lítlar bygdir, hús við grastekjum, aðrar vísa Tórshavn, høvuðsstaðin, og aftur aðrar vísa bergtakandi vakra landsskapið í Føroyum.

I felt like this screen captured so much about the small scale of the Faroe Islands - there is just something extraordinary about the simple benches outside of what is probably the most famous building in the Faroe Islands.

Tá eg vaknaði í morgun, heldur svøvntungur, og hugdi út gjøgnum vindeyga, og sá hvussu ljóst tað var úti, serliga tí at fjøllini vóru kavaklødd, tá vaknaði eg beinanvegin ordiliga, eg fekk eitt gott lag á! Eg plagi annars ikki vanliga at gerast í so góðum hýri, so tíðliga á morgni; um tað var tí at eg hevði sovi lutfallsliga leingi, ella tí at tað var ljóst og kavi úti, eitt boð um at várið byrjar at nærkast, veit eg so ikki.

Snow!

When I woke up this morning, kind of sleepy, and looked out through the window, I saw how light it was outside, and especially how the mountains were covered in snow, I actually woke up immediately, and I was in a great mood! I'm not normally, so early in the morning, so I don't know whether it was because I had slept comparatively late, or because it was so light and snowy outside, or whether it was a message that spring is coming...

Slideshow

I would like to display a slideshow of pictures of the Faroe Islands on the right hand navigation bar. I think we're going to use Flickr for this, and I have made an account for such a purpose. I think it may take a while for new pictures to go completely through the system, though, so for now it is displaying Flickr photos with the keyword "The Faroe Islands".

Any ideas for what sort of pictures should be displayed? Should we switch it out once in a while or work on building a large and diverse collection of beautiful pictures?

Introducing Myself

Hello everyone, my name is Miranda Metheny, I am from the Midwestern United States, and I am the perhaps unlikely second contributor to this blog. It's a bit sad that Elindomiel comes before Roskur in the alphabet, and therefore in the listing of this blog's authors, because this is Uni's blog far more than it is mine. As stated in our header, the primary goal of this blog is to raise awareness and appreciation for "the enchanting people, language, culture, and landscapes of the Faroe Islands." The blog will be updated bilingually in both English and Faroese, and so it could be said that a secondary goal of the blog is to provide relevant reading material for Faroese learners, with an English translation. As Uni is actually a native of the Faroe Islands, and speaks the language fluently, this is primarily his project, and he will be doing most of the posting.

My role, then, is mainly as an assistant translator. Although Uni's English is quite good, I will occasionally be touching it up here and there, or, if the subject is complex or he is busy, even doing the English translation as best I can. My Faroese isn't very good yet, but I hope that it will improve through helping with this project. Occasionally I will also post my own pieces - generally about Faroese things that may be available or have an impact outside of the islands themselves. For example, I may write about a Faroese CD available in the United States, or what resources a foreigner has to teaching himself the language. If I hear mention of the Faroes in our media here, and you can be sure that I am listening, then I will make note of it. In any of these situations, our translation roles will naturally be reversed.

Now that the purpose of the blog, and our contributions to it, have been outlined, I'd like to briefly introduce myself as a human being. :) I am a Journalism, International Studies, and Spanish major in University, and wish I could major in Anthropology and Linguistics as well. My dream job is to become a sort of anthropological journalist, but we'll see. Another idea that appeals to me is teaching Spanish in Norway. I enjoy outdoors activities such as hiking and canoeing, as well as reading, writing, and learning languages. And of course, I love to travel and learn about the world.

Well, that's all for now! I am looking forward to helping with this blog, and I hope that our readers, rather loyal followers or those who drop in a single time from Google, find something here to be worthwhile - whether it intrigues their curiosity, opens their mind, or fills their heart with a greater appreciation for the beauty of one of the world's less known locales - The Faroe Islands.

Mítt dreymaarbeiði er at gerast eitt slag av mannfrøðiligum tíðindafólki, men vit fara at síggja. Eitt annað hugskot, sum mær dámar, er at vera spansktlærari í Noregi. Mær dámar uttandura ítriv, so sum at ferðast til gongu og at rógva í kano, somuleiðis eisini at lesa, skriva og læra mál. Og so sjálvandi elski eg eisini at ferðast og læra um heimin.

Náh men, hatta var alt fyribils! Eg gleði meg til at hjálpa við hesum bloggi, og eg vóni, at okkara lesarir, heldur trúgvu fylgjarir, ella tey, ið detta inná gólvið eina ferð frá Google, finna okkurt, sum er tað vert - um tað so hugbindur teirra forvitni, setur hugsanir í verk, ella fyllir teirra hjørtu við einum størri virðismeting av vakurleikanum í einum av heimsins minni kendu støðum - Føroyum.
